Stefan Salzer was the wrong person at the right place and right time and got to the role of the Global Head of HR by accident. He’s staying in the role because no other company is interested in him nor willing to overpay him like Red Bull. Fortunately at Red Bull HR isn’t seen as a business priority, so having a weak HR leader in place also suits the business.
On one hand Stefan knows the board and what they want really well and is a good filter between the HR organization and the board. On the other hand, he's the prime example of what rewarding loyalty looks like - having barely any relevant experience prior to joining Red Bull, he became a global head of HR from the original team of 3, now having a big global team. Is he the most inspiring or transformational or knowledgeable HR leader out there? No, but he's go a team of brilliant minds around him who make up for this so he doesn't have to.
