Matthew is organized, hard working, well spoken and grate at mechanical tasks. Unfortunately these skills aren’t all that is needed, when transitioning to management. He is more concerned with his own short term job security and optics, than being sure he is helping the team/client. He is able to parrot analysis, that he has seen in other scenarios, but doesn’t seem to be able to do this analysis on his own or understand how the scenarios may differ. This seems unusual for an FSA; maybe he just thinks digging in to confirm his conclusions is a waste of time but it’s sloppy and seems incongruent with his usual due diligence. He doesn’t understand nuance and gives up on any direct report that is less than a star. He seems to have troubles separating his personal life and believes from his job. He abandons his actuarial training as soon as he doesn’t see a need for it any longer. Matthew is my ideal associate, but as a manager his inability to develop/retain staff, and poor analytical skills, could greatly hurt the longterm viability of any office.
