AJ is an incompetent leader. He lacks the knowledge and training to be effective in his role. Unfortunately when he stumbles, rather than taking responsibility, he quickly points the finger at those who report to him and does not shy away from throwing others under the bus. You will not receive any training or feedback under him and will be held down in your role. AJ is a roadblock to progress. He routinely undermines the authority of managers who report to him and halts development out of his own lack of confidence, incompetence and poor understanding of forward thinking. AJ is loyal to Shriners Children’s and in fact has only ever worked at this organization. This is to his detriment as the organization is largely outdated and falls short of other facilities in the region. Because of his lack of broader experience his views are narrow and lacking innovation. He does not possess the qualities of a leader and has achieved his role simply by way of being present when vacancies became available. There is a pattern of his direct reports turning over at a frequency of every 2-4 years. Typical for employee level positions, but not for the managers and directors he oversees. (Red flag!) I urge you if you are considering employment at Shriners Children’s in Sacramento, do NOT take a position that reports to AJ Johnson. It will be the beginning of the end if you do. He comes off unassuming, but is a true snake in the grass looking out only for himself. Do not be fooled by his mild tempered demeanor.
